Eco-tours in Mexico

Mexican Culture PreservationThe Milburn Foundation International is a not-for-profit organization that for more than 20 years has been dedicated to the preservation of indigenous cultures, and especially the the Raramuri (widely known as the Tarahumara Indians) and the environment in which they have lived for centuries --- the Copper Canyon (Barranca del Cobre) region of north central Mexico. Among the Indian peoples of North America, the Raramuri are the most unmixed (with more than 95% having pure Raramuri blood) and among the least touched by modern civilization.

Based in Durango, Colorado and Creel, Mexico, the Milburn Foundation has created and sponsors a variety of programs and projects that support the Raramuri people in preserving their age-old culture and continuing to live in harmony with nature, while incorporating positive influences of the modern world on their own terms.   Included are food, medical assistance, building projects, legal aid programs, international litigation services and eco-tours. Recognizing that development is inevitable in the Copper canyon area, the Mexican national government and State of Chihuahua have recently committed to partnering with the Foundation to develop eco-tourism based upon principles of sustainability and recognition of the economic and cultural needs of the Raramuri.  Our work incorporates a strong educational focus, as we believe that a world in ecological and financial crisis has much to learn about sustainable living from indigenous peoples such as the Raramuri.
